SENTIENCE is the capacity to experience subjectively, and, in Eastern philosophy, sentience is a metaphysical quality of all things that require care and respect.
A Philosophy Forged in Crisis
Conceived during the introspective period of the 2020 pandemic lockdown, OI.SE.AU integrates experimental design strategies with the pedagogical practices of studio teaching and artistic exploration. It envisions architecture not just as a spatial practice but as a medium for consciousness expansion and ecological justice.
The philosophy of OI.SE.AU resonates deeply with a visionary approach to architecture as a medium for fostering interconnectedness and sentience. This philosophy, rooted in care and respect for all entities—human and non-human—reflects a profound alignment with the metaphysics of information and the ethics of co-existence.
OI.SE.AU: The Office for Sentient Architecture
OI.SE.AU emerges as a pioneering platform for architectural inquiry and practice that transcends traditional paradigms by prioritizing sentience—the capacity to experience subjectively—as a central tenet. Inspired by Eastern philosophies, which attribute sentience as an intrinsic quality of all beings and systems, the office emphasizes care and respect as the foundation for design.
Worldbuilding Through Integrated Intelligences
In an era where information systems form complex, interlaced networks of human and non-human intelligence, OI.SE.AU positions itself at the intersection of data, materiality, and imagination. From ubiquitous sensors and embedded AI to vast datasets and advanced machine learning, contemporary architecture is reimagined as an endeavor to weave these elements into design imaginaries that acknowledge the continuum between the quantum, biochemical, and electronic realms.
Cross-Scale Evolutionary Emergence
At its core, OI.SE.AU is driven by an interest in the evolutionary dynamics that emerge from integrated information and communication systems. This perspective invites a rethinking of nature as a flowing, interconnected informational matrix. By bridging scales—from the quantum to the planetary—the practice seeks to uncover patterns and possibilities often hidden by the constraints of contemporary, industrialized perception.
Sentience as Strategy for Justice and Awareness
OI.SE.AU operates at the nexus of Big Data and Small Data, leveraging data science and machine learning to extract patterns and analyze complexities at unprecedented speeds. This capability enables a radical expansion of perception, opening portals to meditate on the informational essence of the world and its underlying interconnectedness. By reclaiming sentience as a shared quality with all life forms, the practice aligns architecture with the fight for environmental and social justice.
Materializing Informational Flows
OI.SE.AU views nature as information in constant flow. Through the visualization and materialization of this flow into complex, elegant shapes, the practice creates meditative artifacts and architectural interventions. These serve as portals to contemplate the informational constitution of reality, fostering reconnection with a nature wired beyond its atmosphere and populated by an ever-growing network of sensors and intelligence.
A Vision for the Future
Through its explorations, OI.SE.AU positions itself as a critical and creative advocate for sentient architecture—one that seeks to rewire humanity’s relationship with nature and technology. By navigating the continuum of life and intelligence, the office builds a foundation for architecture that is as much about caring for the world as it is about creating it.

Daniel Lenz PhD, MArch, BArch
Dr. Daniel Lenz holds a Ph.D. from PROURB/UFRJ, where he investigated urban phenomena through the framework of complexity theory. He earned a Master’s degree in Architecture, Technology, and City from UNICAMP (University of Campinas, São Paulo), focusing on Performative Architecture. He has a Bachelor of Architecture and a degree in Mechatronics from CEFET-CE. He so brings professional experience in Industrial Electronics, specializing in electronic control systems and firmware development. His research explores the application of Information Theory in architecture, emphasizing architectural algorithms, digital materialization, and General Systems Theory, with a particular focus on the emergence of complexity.
Clara Reial, MArch, BArch
Clara Reial holds a Bachelor’s degree in Architecture and Urban Planning and a Master’s degree in Architecture from Mackenzie University, São Paulo. Her research focuses on communal environmental activism and the construction of unexpected alliances in urban, peri-urban, and rural public spaces. Her work explores the role of environmental activism as an agent of insurgent biopower, addressing three territorial scales: rural, peri-urban, and urban. It examines biopolitics and the climate crisis as catalysts for deepening poverty and fostering the emergence of insurgent movements. These movements are presented as opportunities to build collectivity that includes non-human entities, challenging conventional notions of activism and public space.
